Back pain is a very common ailment experienced by most adults at some point in their lives, but the following risk factors can lead to developing back pain that lasts for more than three months, which classifies the pain as chronic. These heightened risk factors include:

  • Age (particularly after the age of 30)
  • Lack of exercise
  • Excess weight and obesity
  • Diseases
  • Repeated improper lifting of heavy objects 
  • Psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety
  • Smoking
